Greek Mediterranean Cuisine @ Prince Hotel & Residence KL

By 12:45 ,

Mention Greek and I think Baklava and mythology. Mythology aside, Greek food is the essence of this post. Over the next 10 days Eccucino at Prince Hotel & Residence KL will be the home of Greek Mediterranean Cuisine, 10-20 May from 6.30pm onwards.

With guest chef, George Diakomichalis and his kitchen team at the helm, you can be assured of an aunthentic taste of Greek cuisine. Chef George is a fourth generation chef in his family and is currently the Executive Chef of Kalymnos Pastries established in 1995 in Adelaide, Australia. Trained in Kalymnos, Greece by his grandfather and uncles, he has won numerous awards for his cooking and had participated in a series of cooking demonstrations in Adelaide.

You will get to indulge in the most authentic of Greek foods. Desserts here I come! How can I resist, the plateful of Baklava was calling my name. The taste so rich, generous with the nuts and filo pastry light and thin, it was simply delicious! Then there was the Galaktobouriko, custard in filo pastry, another must try for its creamy custard. Oh and the Koq, custard filled shell with chocolate ganache is also a wonderful treat.  Loukoumades, a pastry dessert drizzled with cinnamon and honey, which is sometimes called a Greek donut is simple yet yummy. Loukoumades are the oldest recorded European pastry and were ceremoniously awarded to the victors in the ancient Olympic Games. Another one you might want to try is Finikia, a walnut shortbread with citrus honey.

A rich, sweet pastry made of layers of crisp filo pastry filled with chopped nuts and sweetened with syrup or honey. A very popular sweet versions found throughout Greece, the Middle East and Central Asia.

Now for the mains, get your palattes ready for beef moussaka, lamb souvlaki, prawn saganaki, calamari tiganito and fasolatha to name a few. The menu changes every evening but the popular dishes will be served daily. My personal faves would be the beef moussaka and lamb souvlaki. The moussaka is well seasoned and is packed with beef and eggplant. Loved it! The lamb souvlaki, tender and juicy. It would not be complete without Khoriatiki, a Greek country salad filled with feta cheese and olives. *yumms*
One of the most well-known Greek dish popular in the Meditrranean and Middle Eastern region. It is a baked eggplant dish complemented ground beef or lamb with tomatoes and spices.

I was also lucky enough to find out how Baklava is made. Chef George did a short demonstration using a family recipe. As much as I want to try making it myself, I doubt that it will turn out right. So lets just leave it to the professionals.

In conjunction with Mother’s Day on Sunday, Chef George also brought along his mother, Chef Poppy to treat mothers and grandmothers to a “Mamma Mia” buffet brunch priced at RM75++ and complimentary dining for mothers, grandmothers as well as kids under 12 on 13 May 2012. Mothers and grandmothers can look forward to a mother-son cooking demonstration and will receive a Sompoton Spa Mother’s Day gift voucher as well, while enjoying a live band performance along with fun activities for children.
